BUSY “BIG FIVE”

PLAN TO END TROUBLE POLAND AND~LITHUANIA By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright. ; Reed. 12.50 p.m. GENEVA, Wed. The “Big Five” have drawn up a formula which they believe will end the trouble between Poland and Lithuania. An earlier message said that much interest was centred in the attempts of the “Big Five”—the heads of the delegations from Britain. France. Italy, Germany and Japan, Sir Austen Chamberlain, M. Briand, Signor Scialoja, Herr Stresemann. and Mr. Adachi —to straighten out the relations of Poland and Lithuania, before the matter came into the open Council upon the complaint by Lithuania. The five statesmen had a lengthy meeting at M. Briand's hotel, where legal authorities were in attendance. At the end of the meeting Sir Austen bolted through the crowd of journalists to his motor-car, evidently determined not to submit to questioning. The Premier of Lithuania, M. Waldemaras, learned of the proceedings from Signor Scialoja. It is believed that they are shaping at present in the direction of Lithuania, declaring, contrary to her attitude hitherto, that there is not a state of war existing with Poland, and at the same time making clear that she does not renounce her clai mto Vilna.

The Council will thereupon recommend the countries to resume their normal relations, and will possibly agree to take note officially of Lithuania’s protest regarding Yilna.—A and N.Z.
