TOMATOES

Tomtao is a tender annual and native of South America. The fruit possesses medicinal properties which render them particularly desirable as a remedy for affections of the liver and other organs. Upwards of 100 varieties of tomatoes more or less distinct, are now in cultivation.

Among the leading varieties grown in New Zealand are Carter’s Sunrise, Klondine Red, Holmes Supreme, Burwood Prize. Market Favourite, Golden Queen, Peach, Ideal, Trophy, Earliana.

No great deal of trouble need be expended on the preparation of the soil, moderately rich garden soil is all that is required. The most profitable arrangement is to plant out the seedlings 2ft. apart and 3ft. between the rows. A good strong stake should support each plant and a slight dressing of manure is sometimes beneficial.

Occasional waterings through the dry months and carefully watching the growth for rust or black spot on the foliage and pinching out the side laterals and rank will soon make the plants develop and bring them to flowering stage.

At the flower in" oeriod manuring is essential. Sulphate of potash, sulphate of ammonia, sulphate of iron, superphosphate, mixed together and used at the r*ate of one oupce per fluid gallon will give size and colour to the fruit. Bordeaux powder is the best blight preventive. Two tablespoonfuls a kerosene tin of water. Arsenate of lead is best for caterpillars.
