MILITARY FUNERAL FOR NAVAL VETERAN
SAW SERVICE IN THE ’SO’S Press Association. GORE, To-day. An old warrior of the British Navy who took part in many historic engagements of the past century died in the Gore Hospital in the person of Samuel Ellis, aged 98 years. Mr. Ellis joined the navy as a boy, and was present at the storming of the Heights of Alma in 1554. the taking of Odessa, the fall of Sebastopol, and saw the charge of the Light Brigade. He participated in events of the Indian Mutiny, being at the relief of Tnr know He saw service in China, Se West Indies, and was one of the party which escorted the ill-fated Emperor Maxmillan of Mexico to his further adventures an epileptic fit led to his discharge. Deceased came to Mew Zealand in the 70’s after over 30 years in the navy ultimately settling at Ferndale. near Gore. There ho worked as a rabbiter. He retained hfs faculties to the last. He will be accorded a military tuneral.
