HUGE DIVIDEND RACES AT ASHHURST BORSALENE, DIVISION WINNER NOTES ON THE RUNNING (Special to TEE SUN.) PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. Fine weather favoured the Ashhurst Club for its annual fixture to-day. The course was rather dead, but in good order. All the racing Was good and recent form worked out fairly well. A sensation was caused by the huge dividend paid by Borsalene in the second division of the Siberia Hack, the price running to nearly three figures. The totalisator handled £15,456, against £16,340 last year. HURDLES TO VEXATIOUS

Of the original field of 15 acceptors in the hurdles, Lombardo, Panchito and Wembley declined their engagements. Mister Gamp, on the strength of his win at Levin, was installed favourite in a small betting pool, with Vexatious second in demand, a matter of £6B separating the. pair. Blue Peter was third favourite, 23 tickets ahead, of Ivilburn. Benmure was the smartest to begin and led across the top from Ratapiko, Lady Faye and Maidos, with Lady Acre moving up. The last named had assumed command by the time the straight was reached, with Blue Peter, Maidos, Kilburn, Benmure, Chrissarto and Lady Faye next in attendance. Kilburn went to thd* front to show the way to Blue Peter, Lady Acre, Maidos, Vexatious and Mister Gamp, the leader being still three lengths clear from Lady Faye crossing the top, with Blue Peter, Chrissarto, Vexatious and Mister Gamp following at intervals. Vexatious commenced her run early and was up with Kilburn at the last fence, then going on to win nicely by a length, from Kilburn, with, Chrissarto two lengths back. Mister Gamp was fourth, with Lady Faye. Maidos arnd Braeman. FAVOURITE WINS THE MAIDEN A division was obviated in the Maiden Stakes by the defection of Lady Raven, Miss Boniform, Broad Acre, Le Champ, Abisogne and ITodren, thus bringing the number of runners within the safety limit of 19. Tom Byrne was preferred to Shining Star to the extent of 25 tickets, with a drop of almost £2OO to Card Trick. Then came Rash, with Lethal, Card Trick, Warfille, Corbel and Radion in a bunch. THE DIVISION WINNERS

The size of the field in the Siberia Handicap necessitated the event being run in two divisions. The defection of Miss Mercia, Royal Elm, Tom Byrne and Plane from'the first division made it an event of 10 runners. Vast Acre was favourite from Imitation, the pair being, however, in different divisions, with Miss Pat next in demand. From an. excellent dispatch Royal Time and Miss Pat were first out, but almost Immediately Arch Arrow went to the front from Vast Acre, Royal Time, Miss Pat, Lady Cynthia and Flying Shot. Arch Arrow and Vast Acre landed first, into the straight, both being dear oF Royal Time, Miss Pat, Lady Cynthia,' Bine. Hohoro and Hypnotic. In the run to the post Miss Pat came with a .great spurt to overtake Vast Acre and gain the verdict by a head, with Lady Cynthia two lengths back. Then came Royal Time, Arch Arrow, Expense and Grey Mist. BIG OUTSIDER WINS

* The Raider, Powjairi. and Shining Star were the defections from the second division. From a ragged start Borsalene was first out from Imitation, Bissac, Heather Blend and Silver Tray, and at the turn for home Borsalene was still showing the way to Bissac, Imitation, Heather Blend and Mandy. Heather Blend was actually first into the straight from Borsalene, Bissac and Imitation being .next in attendance. In the run to the post Maui came up to the leader, but . the latter hung on to get the verdict b.y a head with Silver Tray half a length behind Maui. Then came Heather Blend, Bissgc and Mandarine. The order underwent but little ehnge erossing the top and Mireusonta was still in the van at the straight enRoyal Land and Lipsol in close attendance. With heads straightened Bonogne joined issue on the outside, while Arro-Sv Lad got up on the rails, and m a-great tussle over the last -Pinch the favourite’got up in time towin by a short neck, with Arrow Lad a head in front of Mireusonta. Kilmoyler, who had been somewhat fractious, was one of the first to find his feet, to lead trom Royal Elm, Avazone and Volplane, and they raced in that order along the back, with Night Witch and Rising Star in behind the leading quartette. Kilmoyler was still well clear at the straight entrance, with Volplane and Royal Elm as his nearest attendants. TORN TO PIECES HUNGRY GREYHOUNDS! “Tin" Hare” meeting of the Australian Coursing Association, Ltd., at the Newcastle Sports Ground a few nights ago. ended in a fiasco. * Six of the nine courses were run, but only four were valid—the other two —the Hamilton and Honeysuckle Stakes—were both declared “no course” owing to the hare mechanism failing to function. The dogs caught the hare in both courses, and tore it to pieces. Consternation reigned among the bookmakers and punters after the Hamilton Stakes. ’Luring the running of the course; Miss Dawn caught the hare and interfered with most of the other runners. After the course had been completed the numbers of Sandstorm, Pat’s Image, and Miss Dawn were hoisted as the placegetters. Many of the bookmakers took this ,to mean that the course was valid and paid out on Sandstorm. Punters yelled “no course” and after a delay of nearly half an hour, the committee decided to declare the race “No course” and all bets were declared off. Many were the arguments between the bookmakers and their clients owing to the fact that many of the former refused to refund bets until they got a personal guarantee that their losses on Sandstorm would be paid by the association. Rain commenced to fall after the first course, and affected the running of the “tin hare” mechanism, which would not grip on the wet ground. Finally the meeting was abandoned after an attempt had been made to run the Honeysuckle Stakes.

bar© neck separating the pair at the post, with Volplane two lengths back. Then came Lin Arlington, Bent, Avazone. and Rising Star. HOROMEA MAKES AMENDS Bonogne was saddled up again for the Rarnnai Handicap, and was nearly as well backed as epistle, while Horomea was best backed of the others. Epistle jumped out well, and soon had charge, along with Lipsol, while Horomea, Standard and Royal Land were next. Hororaea ran to the front more than half a mile from home, and was not headed winning by three lengths from Queen’s Choice, with Bonogne finishing fast half a length away and Brigadier Bill close up fourth. Then came Standard and Epistle. HENNA AGAIN There was a good pool in the Manawatu Gorge Hack. Henna, though favourite, was only £“2 better backed than Wanderlust, and there was good money for Excess, Capitulation and Twink. Excess caught the jump out and piloted the field out of the straight, with Henna handy and Wanderlust a little farther back. Going along the back Capitulation ran up on even terms with Excess, and the pair carried on the running together from Essential, with Henna next and Wanderlust at the head of the others. Excess was the first to turn for home, with Capitulation outside him. and Henna behind on the rails while Wanderlust was moving quickly round the field. Half-way down the straight ' Excess moved out from the rails a little and Henna slipped through. Meanwhile Wanderlust, on the outer, was practically on terms with the leaders, and a good finish ensued. Henna did best and won by nearly a length from Wanderlust, who beat Excess by about a neck. Essential -was a fairly good fourth, with Capitulation and Calithe at the head of the remainder. Twink got away badly and was always in the ruck.
