NEW GRAMMAR SCHOOLS
SITES CONSIDERED MEETING OF THE BOARD The chairman. Professor A. P. W. Thomas, at s r esterday’s meeting of the Auckland. Grammar Schools’ Board, reported that, with Mr. Ward Baker, he had inspected a site of 10 acres on the Panmure-Otahuhu Road. He had recommended it to the Minister as a suitable position for a future school. The price was approximately £3,000. On another site at Ellerslie, which was also considered, an additional school to provide immediate relief to the Auckland Grammar School could be built at a cost of about £6,000. The chairman’s action in recommending the sites for future schools was endorsed. The Minister of Education advised that he was unable to increase the amount of unauthorised expenditure this year, and it was decided to make early application for advances next session. The Education Department advised of a subsidy of £175 toward the cost of laying out the playing fields at the Takapuna School. The offer of Mr. L. E. Rhodes, Mayor of Mount Albert, of a cup for a lifesaving championship at the Mount Albert School was accepted with thanks. .The headmistress of the Auckland Girls’ School reported that there were 66 passes in the teachers’ certificate examination f ,nd 45 Royal life-saving passes. The board approved the proposal to form an artillery section of the Auckland Grammar School Cadets. That the board should request the Defence Department to contribute toward the cost was suggested by the headmaster. Major-General R. Young, General Officer Commanding the Xew Zealand Forces, had said he would welcome an increase in the number of boys with knowledge of artillery.
