BURGLARS AT WORK
SURREY CRESCENT VISITED BARS AND LOCKS HOLD OUT fpiIREE attempts at breaking and entering were made upon shops at Surrey Crescent last night. At Mr. C. Parker’s ironmonger’s shop no attempt was actually made on the premises, but a show-case outside was broken open and a bicycle lamp removed. The hairdressing establishment of Mr. P. J. Sharkey, a few doors away, on which two previous attempts have been made, also i>eceived attention, but a six-lever lock withstood the siege. An attempt to break and enter was also made at Mr. G. V. Preston’s grocer’s shop, next door hut one to Mr. Sharkey’s premises. This place has been broken into on four occassions, seven previous attempts having been made. Last night attention was first centred on the back door, but on being stopped by an iron bar at the back of the door the intruders attempted to force the front door. The glass in the door was broken to enable the safety catch to be pulled back, but a burglar-proof lock defied all efforts and the attempt was apparently abandoned. Sometime during the night the premises of Mann and Co., butchers, at the Grey Lynn terminus, were also entered, but as far as is known nothing of any value was taken.
