ACROSS AUSTRALIA

NEW RECORD ESTABLISHED A new record has been established for the famous Darwin to Melbourne run. This across-Australia tour is well known as being the most strenuous reliability test in Australia, and certainly we have nothing like it in New Zealand. At 5 o’clock on Wednesday morning, November 2, there left Darwin a standard model Essex Super Six car, driven by Dr. Allen Mackay, who had with him Mr. Barney Wood. This same car drove into Melbourne at 9.20 a.m. on the following Tuesday morning, November 8, having covered the distance of 3,380 miles in about six days four hours. A remarkable achievement, especially when it is considered that this requires an average mileage each day of 550 miles. This beats the previous record for that trip by about one whole day and three hours.
