DEATH AT WHANGAREI

ROBERT YOUNG KERNOHAN At 6 a.m. on Saturday a well-known character passed away in the person of Mr. Robert Young Kernohan, at the age of 63 years. Mr. Kernohan, who was in normal health right up to the time of his death, was a past member of the Whangarei County Council, the Harbour Board. Hospital Board, and a steward of the Whangarei Racing Club. Deceased hailed from the north of Ireland. Bereft of his parents at nine years of age, he was sent to New Zealand with a relative to try his fortune. He spent 18 months with a gas company in New Plymouth. While still h lad of 15 he went into the kauri forest with the Mitchelson Timber Co., where he worked for four years, gaining strength and experience. In 1879 fate brought him to Whangarei and by the time he was 20 he was a prosperous and experienced contractor. Twenty-five years ago he secured a 600-acre farm in the Mangakahia block, being one of the first settlers there. As a pioneer he had to carve out his home and holding from the bush, having as his only assistant a lad. In 1902 he married Miss Cecilia Woods, daughter of Mr. John Woods. Otago. He is survived by his widow and family of four sons and three daughters. The funeral, which was well attended, took place on Sunday afternoon.
