DIVED THREE TIMES TO RESCUE YOUTH
DROWNING FATALITY WATER BITTERLY COLD A gallant attempt to save the life of Hughie Mcllwain was made yesterday by Mr. A. B. Congdon, of Bush Road, Albany. Mcllwain, who was 17 years of age, was drowned in a waterhole at Albany. Although the water was bitterly cold and the waterhole 25 feet deep, Mr. Congdon dived in three times, but at last he had to give up the attempt. The boy’s body was recovered today by the Takapuna police, who dragged the waterhole. At about mid-day yesterday Mcllwain, with two companions from Birkenhead, left home to go for a swim. Mcllwain dived into the waterhole, although the water was very cold. As soon as he went into the water he seemed to be in difficulty. He rose to the surface three times and the other two boys, who were on the bank, threw their belts to him. They dared not go into the water because they could not swim.
