OTOROHANGA CRICKETERS CLUB OFF ICIALS ELECTED The annual meeting of the Otero - hanga Cricket Club was well attended. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr. P. F. Skinner; president. Mr. 11. G. Corbett; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. Babe, S. J. Fortescue. F. F. Maynard and A. Prescott club captain, Mr. H. G. Corbett; secretary. Mr. S J. Fortescue; treasurer. Mr. C. Anderson; auditor, air. C. Tucker: delegates, Messrs. A. Cahill. Corbett and Fortescue: management committee. Messrs. Cahill. Christmas. Maynard and president and secretary. The club captain is to lie elected prior to the first inter-club match. The prospects for the season are particularly bright and the club will probably affiliate wit, the Te Awamutu Association instead of with the Maniapoto Association, as in past years.

MISSING FIREARM WHANGAREI PROSECUTION At the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Johr. Norris was charged with seliing a firearm without having the necessary permit to do so. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady said accused had a permit in 1922 to purchase a rifle, which he had done. Since then he had sold the weapon an I -he police could not trace its whereabouts. Accused had mad© a statement saying he was willing to give the names of the two men who had since had possession of the weapon providing an assurance was given that these men would not be involved for having it in their possession without a permit. The Bench said decision would be reserved until next court to give accused an opportune of divulging the two names. NORTHERN LANDS VISITOR FAVOURABLY IMPRESSED Mrl G. W. Richards, of Otorohanga, and chairman of the King Country and North Auckland deteriorated land committees, has returned from a very extensive tour of the districts. To THE SUN’S correspondent he said that the Government and the departmental officials are now fully alive to the real position in regard to Crown tenants and ameliorative action is being taken which is bound to result in considerable improvement for the lessees. He is intimately acquainted with the North Auckland peninsula and describes the progress made there in the past 15 years as wonderful. Blackberry and tall fescue, which previously monopolised large areas of land, have been replaced by paspalum, and he thinks that the peninsula is coming into its own. The climate of Kaikohe any many other parts he thinks is perfect. WITHOUT PREJUDICE BETTING CHARGE DISMISSED i At the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., John M. McGregor, an insurance argent, pleaded not guilty to making a wager with Alfred Ernest Lacey, on August 13. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady deposed to finding a cheque for £l. signed by defendant, whilst executing a search warrant on Lacey’s premises. He also found a document showing a wager made on Whenuanui for £1 on the date mentioned, in the name of “McG.” Defendant said he gave the cheque to Lacey to cash in the hotel, as he wanted change for a client. In answer to the bench, defendant said he could not remember this client's name. In summing up, the Bench said no evidence* was tendered as to which meeting this bet; was laid on, and although the cheque was some evidence, as also was the note made in the name “McG.,” some further evidence was necessary to connect the parties. in the absence of that evidence he could not enter a conviction, and would dismiss the case, although as some future evidence might toe brought to light this: would be without prejudiceTE AWAMUTU CHAMBER EDUCATION DISCUSSED The usual monthly meeting of the ‘ Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce: was held on Tuesday morning. Mr. J W. Jeffery presided, and there were ! also present Messrs. C. G. Downes, R. \ A. Coyne, A. G. Warburton, S. Clark. , G. W. Maers, D. Bockett, J. Oliphant, ; and G. O. Jour (lain, secretary. A reply was received from the Auckland Education Board to the chamber’s representations in favour of arranging for commercial subjects to be taught in the secondary department of the local district high school. The board had forwarded a copy of the; letter to the Education Department iri support of the representations already made for authority to be given for the establishment of commercial classes iri district high schools from the beginning of next year. The syllabus of the Hamilton Technical High School was read, which provides for book-keeping, typewriting, shorthand, civics, arithmetic, English, etc. It was pointed out that the d€ - partment had a syllabus for schools of Te Awamutu’s grade, but the trouble was to get it put into operation. It was decided to defer the subject till next meeting It was agreed to ask Mr. A. J. Sinclair to give an address at the next monthly luncheon. The commercial agent of the New Zealand Railways Department is to be asked to give an address on his department’s activities at the next ordinary meeting.

AMATEUR THEATRICALS OTOROHANGA ON TOUR The Otorohanga Operatic Societybas concluded a very successful senaon with the popular Chinese musical comedy, "San Toy,” which was stccemfully produced in Otorohanga, and Te Awamutu. Capacity houses were experienced in all the towns visited and the production has proved very popular. The title role of San Toy, the Chinese girl who masquerade* as a boy, was excellently filled by Mr*. Phyllys Nathan, who has taken the soprano lead in the four other productions of former years. Akhonp Mrs. Nathan was outstandingly star, Dudley (Miss Lucy Adams) *»■ Li (Mr. M. Barnett) provided the lighter side with great effect.
