NO ASSISTANCE FROM LIQUOR PROFITS
PRESBYTERY’S ATTITUDE Profits from breweries and pub* lie houses are not wanted by the Auckland Presbytery. Presbytery decided yesterday to ask the General Assembly not to apply for any further grants from the Macarthy Trust, as a proportion of its profits came from breweries ancl licensed houses. The following overture was submitted by the Rev. L. H. Hunt: “That whereas certain committees connected with our church have: applied for and received grants from the Macarthy Trust and that as the said trust is at present deriving profits from the liquor traffic and whereas our church has already committed itself to the policy of the total abolition of that traffic, this Presbytery respectfully overtures the General Assembly to instruct its committees not to apply for aiiy more grants from the said trust and, further, that it instructs the convener of the Maori Mission Committee to refund the sum of £IOO appearing in the Blue Book, 1926, page 226, and such other sums as have been received by thi3 committee.’’ Discussion of the motion was held in committee.
The resolution was passed after the second portion referring to grants already made had been deleted. Five xirembers voted against the motion.
