MR. W. T. COSGRAVE RE-ELECTED SEVENTY-SIX VOTES TO SEVENTY By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright Received 11 a.m. RUGBY, Tuesday. r. W. T. COSGRAVE was to-day elected President of the Executive Council of the Irish Free State, by the new Parliament. The voting was 76 against 70. There were no other nominations.

tpHE galleries of the Dail were crowded, but there were no scenes similar to those before the general election. The Fianna Fail members again took the oath. All the Farmers’ Party and Independents supported Mr. Cosgrave. Labour and the Fianna Fail parties opposed him. Captain Redmond and other National League members abstained from voting. Professor Hayes was re-elected Speaker. There was applause on all sides, though Mr. De Valera unsuccessfully proposed to reduce his present salary of £1,700 to £I,OOO a year.

Mr. Ernest Blythe, Minister of Finance, informed Captain Redmond that there was no chance of the repeal of the Public Safety Act. Mr. de Valera states that the attitude of the members of the Fianna Fail toward the oath of allegiance has not changed. They will refuse to give allegiance except to the Irish nation.

The Dublin correspondent ot the “Dally Telegraph” says Mr. de Valera’s declaration shows that he and his followers do not heed the hierarchy’s pastoral., in which the sin of perjury was strongly denounced. Most of the members of the Dail have now been sworn in. It was felt to be uncertain how the election of President would result. Six mem-

bers of the Farmers’ Party held the position in their hands as between Mr. W. T. Cosgravo a.nd Mr. de Valera. — A. and N.Z. The final figures in the Irish Free State election last month gave Mr. Cosgrave’s Government a majority of six.
