THE LATE REV. W. E. RICE
TRAVELLED MINISTER The death of the Rev. William Edmuncl Rice at the age of 70 is reported from Gloucester, England. Beginning his career in Bristol as a Sunday Schol teacher, Mr. Rice, later entered the college of the late Rev. C. H. Spurgeon and became the pastor of the Baptist Church at Earl’s Colne, near Gloucester. Coming to New Zealand, Mr. Rice took charge of the Baptist Tabernacle, Auckland, in order to allow the pastor, the Rev. T. Spurgeon, to visit England. After two years here Mr. Rice went to South Australia for nine years and then returned to England. He took up the ministry of the Brunswick Road Baptist Church in 1893, remaining there for 14 years. In 1907 ill-health forced him to retire and he and his wife went on a tour in the interests of Dr. Barnado’s Homes. He was instrumental in raising £IB,OOO during two and a half year’s tour of Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. At the end of the tour lie returned to the ministry. Mr. Rice is survived by his wife and two children.
