RHODES SCHOLARSHIP
AUCKLAND’S CANDIDATES A UCKLAND’S candidates for the two Rhodes Scholarships of 1927 are Mr. E. E. Bailey and Mr. G. G. McLeod, B.A. The Professorial Board of the Auckland University College made the selection in that order this morning from five nominees. The nomination of Mr. Bailey, it is interesting to note, was not approved by the Students’ Association, which had put forward Messrs. J. C. Andrews, M.Sc., L. H. Briggs, B.Sc., and E. F. Thompson. Both Mr. Bailey and Mr. McLeod are old Sacred Heart College boys. The former is employed by the legal firm of Fitchett, Rees and Luxford, of Auckland, and the latter is a master at Mount Albert Grammar School. BRILLIANT SCHOLAR
A good all-rounder is Mr. Bailey, who is just over 20 years of age. He-, won a junior national scholarship at Sacred Heart College in 1920, and or:
his own initiative passed in three group's the teacher’s D examination before he was 15. In 1922 he was dux of the school, and he matriculated and won a senior national scholarship in the same year. He was again dux in 192 3, and won a university national scholarship. At the university he has had a brilliant scholastic career, and qualified as a solicitor last year when only 19. This year he is taking the final section of his LL.B., and a senior scholarship course. A sturdy forward, he played lock for the university football team which visited Fiji, and this year he played for the senior B Varsity team until temporarily injured. He is secretary of the Catholic Lawn Tennis Association, and tenth on the association’s ladder. He has also had experience in rowing, yachting and swimming. If he is elected to a scholarship lie proposes to enter upon an advanced study of law and, if time permits, of classics. On his return he would enter practice in New Zealand, and he has in mind the assumption of an academic position in the faculty of law in one of the colleges.. STUDENT ATHLETE
Mr. G. G. McLeod gained a junior national scholarship at Sacred Hea.rt College, where ho captained the second XI., played for the second XV., and won the junior athletic cup. He matriculated at 15, and. aroing up to the varsity, took his B.A. degree with a premium in economics when he was 19. He will complete his M.A. this year. At athletics he has represented the college in the varsity tournament for several years in the 220yds. 440yds, and high jump. He was head prefect at the Auckland Training College, which he has also represented in athletics. On four occasions Mr. McLeod has played for th'e Auckland B Rugby team, and he is a noted winger for the College First XV. He is the secretary of the literary and athletic clubs at college. At Oxford, he intends, if elected, to take philosophy and economics.
