INSULT TO TOTE

BOOKMAKERS FAVOURED BACK TO OLD RULES AGAIN Armed with a tenner a punter gave the tota'lisator its greatest insult since the New South Wales Government adopted the new rules of dividend calculation which they rescinded on Tuesday of last week. He marched up to the Kensington totalisator, tenner in hand. “Are you running the tote under the old rules again?” he asked. “No,” answered the tote clerk. “Well, you don’t get my tenner.” And the tenner was carried to the bookmakers. Last Thursday week was the last day for the amended tote rules in the metropolitan area, and something like the old rules will obtain at Randwick. At all events the tote will cease being “blind.” Calculators will again be able to determine approximate odds on the: tote prior to the race. The percentage for three-dividend races will still be 50-30-20, as under the amended rules. One-dividend races will be for four starters or less, as the amended rules provide, instead of the original five starters. Two dividends will be paid where: five, six or seven horses start. Three dividends will be paid when eight or more horses start. The pony punter who showed his contempt for the just-dead totd rules is a fair sample of all racegoers. Thousands more will use the tote at; Randwick, because from, now on they need not fear that the placing of a. favourite will cramp the odds about any outsider they fancy. Of course, punters on favourites don’t want to forget that they aren’t always going to get tlneLr money back when their fancy runs a place.
