NEW ZEALAND TEACHER The fact that he is an efficient masseur was responsible for the arrival of Brother Malachy in Auckland to-day by the Aorangi. TTHE Marist Brother, who has had 30 years’ teaching experience in the Islands, is accompanying Brother Columbanus, the travelling head of his order, as he was taken seriously ill while at Suva. Born in Wanganui, Brother Malachy was naturally anxious to resume acquaintance with the land of his birtn. A stay at Rotorua, he is inclined to believe, will restore Brother Columbanus to health. While in New Zealand Brother Malachy will visit as many schools as possible sa that his school at Suva may benefit. “I may even be able to teach the New Zealanders something,” he says. As a matter of fact, Brother Malachy is thoroughly up to date. The cinema in his school is the only one in au educational establishment in the Islands. “We find it invaluable,” he says, “especially for teaching technical subjects such as, for instance, handicrafts.” Chinese, Japanese, Hindus and Pacific Islanders of different types attend the Marist Brothers’ School at Suva. Brother Malachy is particularly interested in the physical development of his boys. After a hard day’s teaching he thinks nothing of taking a class in the gymnasium at night. When the school carried off the boxing championship recently the brother was an exceedingly proud man.
