FORMER BANKER’S VIEWS SUCCESS OF N.Z. CRICKETERS what I saw there is no - 1 - unemployment in Italy, France or Belgium. All the. industries are working to capacity.” This statement regarding industrial activity on the Continent was made last evening by Mr. G. A. U. Tapper, ex-manager of the Bank of New Zea.land, Christchurch, who returned by the Rotorua from an extended trip abroad. Mr. Tapper said that new buildings seemed to be going up everywhere on the Continent. The extraordinary spread of the city of London amazed him, and London’s traffic problem is now very serious- Notwithstanding the enormous streams of traffic in the heart of the city it. is marvellously controlled. Since his last visit to England, Mr. Tapper has noticed big changes in London. Alterations are going on everjrwhere, and when he left one of the main thoroughfares. Piccadilly, was being taken up for repairs. “There is a general feeling among the big business men at Home that they must come out to the Dominions of the Empire and see conditions for themselves,” said Mr. Tapper. “I urged those whom I met to come. New Zealand its thought very highly of at Home.” Mr. Tapper said that the High Commissioner, Sir James Parr, is doing very good work. Before he left England, Mr. Tapper attended a function at the High Commissioner’s Office, where Sir James was displaying New Zealand apples. Among those present were many well-known business men and the Right Hon. L. C. M. S- Amery, who will be in New Zealand shortly. Mr. Tapper was enthusiastic about the success of the New Zealand cricketers. “There is no doubt that; our fellows did remarkably well,” he said, £ind they created a great impression. Dempster and Dacre had a great following and impressed the people at Home. I saw several of the matches, following the team round for a time.” Mr. Tapper said that he saw large numbers of Americans in France and England, and the “American invasion” seemed tc be an established fact.
