THE CRICKET SEASON OPENS IN CHRISTCHURCH
RICCARTON STARTS WELL Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The cricket season opened at Christchurch yesterday. There was a keen breeze,, with sunshine, and the wickets and playing fields were in mid-summer condition. Riccarton, last year’s champions, playing against West Christchurch, began the season well by scoring 419 for seven wickets (Cox 131, Evans 154, Guiney 34, Gibbs, not out, 35). The opposition was only moderate. Sydenham, batting against St. Albans, were all out for 213 (W. Oliver 45, Hahn, not out, 68). St. Albans lost one wicket for 75 runs (Wood, not out, 30, and Falloon, not out, 40). Playing against Old Boys, East Christchurch were all out for 152 runs (Gregory 48). Old Boys scored 170 runs for three wickets (Nixon 75. Morelake 45). Linwood, batting against Old Collegians, scored 241 (R. Reed 66. Gates, not out, 40). Bowling for Old Collegians, Sugden took four wickets for 46 runs. Old Collegians lost three wickets for 37.
