WANGANUI HORSES FOR ELLERSLIE

FINAL TRY-OUTS FOR AUCKLAND AND OTHER MEETINGS (Special to THE SUE.) WANGANUI, Tuesday. In view of the fact that Civility, Kiosk and Paleta claim engagements at the Auckland Racing Club’s Spring Meeting on Saturday and Mondav, more than ordinary interest attached to their display at the Wanganui track tins morning. The weather was fine and clear when training operations commenced just before six o’clock, and a light northerly was blowing which increased to a good breeze after the breakfast interval. Thus any advantage gained by the evaporation of the dew was more than lost by the effect of the wind, which was dead against those horses galloping the right way when thev were covering the final two furlongs. KIOSK PLEASES The first to make an appearance were Kiosk and Limosa, who were given pace work on the inside and then sent over four furlongs the reverse way on number one track, hopping off at the two furlongs and finishing at the six. Kiosk was ridden by Watts, and “ stable apprentice was up on Limosa, They got away to an even start and ran the first furlong, which is on n tend, in 14, the next was covered in 12, and they reached the end o' three furlongs in 37 3-5. Over the final stages the pair were eased up to register 52 for the journey, a very creditable performance. The Tea Tray horse was doing it nicely at the finish and promises to run well in his Ellerslie engagement which is likely to be the open sprint’ the Shorts Handicap. REED TO RIDE CIVILITY Before this pair were off the track Civility hopped off to cover four furlongs the reverse way, a light-weight as usual being her pilot. The first quarter down the straight was covered in 21 4-5, and she sped even faster over the next furlong, which was left behind in 11 3-5, and the final furlong taking 12 1-5, the fast time of 48 3-5 was recorded for the half mile. With R. Reed in the saddle in the Flying Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday, the Elysian mare will have something to say in the deciding stages. PALETA FOR G.N. GUINEAS Star Area and Paleta, Who both raced with a good deal of hard luck at Hastings on Saturday, were given pace work, and the last-named was sent along at a good three-quarter pace over the last three furlongs. He looked a bit tucked up after his journey, but should soon throw off the effects of the effort in the Guineas at the Hawke's Bay meeting. In the Great northern Guineas on Saturday he will be up against a hot proposition in Laughing Prince, but he may be depended on to acquit himself well. Civility, Paleta and Kiosk left this afternoon for Auckland, where thev may be given a final tryout on Thursday morning. FOR MINOR MEETINGS After breakfast several gallops were done by horses claiming engagements at the Manawatu Hunt. Otaki and Waverley meetings. Atone struck out freely over six furlongs, which we recovered in 1.22, the first half mile in 52 1-5. It was not a bad performance for a hunter, and lie may get on the w inning list when the company is not too select. Whenuanui (light-weight) was allotted a task over four furlongs, this gallop, like Atene’s, being the right way round. Covering the first furlong in 12, and the quarter in 24 2-5, the Acre gelding felt the effects of the breeze over the final quarter, which occupied 25 4-5, making the time for the full journey 50 1-5. Whenuanui is engaged in the Brewer Handicap at the Waverley meeting on Labour Day. Another to he given strong work was Archon, who ran the first furlong of five in 13 1-5, the quarte- in 26 1-5 and three in 38 2-5. The full journev occupied 1.7, which could have been improved upon. PROMISING HURDLER Elysianor was sent over four flights of hurdles with C. Butler as pilot. He acquitted himself in fine style C ’f™ the . obstacles in his stride. Timed from jump to jump he covered whi?h d -? nd a ~ half furlongs in 1.36 2-5, Otaki, where he' should
