LAWN TENNIS
NEW COMPETITION GRADE AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION MEETS An extra grade was added to its inter-club competitions by the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association lasr. evening. This year there will be practically five grades, A, two sections of B, C. and D. A record attendance of delegates was presided over by Mr. E. Hickson. When the question of inter-club competition was introduced, Mr. V. R. Johns suggested that the extra hour’s play provided by the Summer Time Bill would allow teams of six met and four women in the A grade competition. The amendment was defeated, and it was decided that teams of four anc. four should play in a knock-out competition. Nine teams, it was reported, would, enter for the A grade, Remuera, Eden
and Epsom, and University having two each. The B grade, it was decided, would be played in two sections, one a knockout and the other a play-out competition. The committee was given power to limit the entries in the C grade and form an extra D grade. Entries are to close on October 20. Application was made by the Manukau Association for absorption in the Auckland Association, that body having been weakened by loss of teams. The application was granted. Delegates from clubs in the outer suburban area reported dissatisfaction with the competitions provided and asked to be allowed to enter in city .competitions. Mr. J. Bartrum thought that it would be unwise to outer clubs to enter because of travelling difficulties. It was decided to cdll a meeting of suburban delegates to decide what could be done. Reporting on a conference with the Parks Committee of the City Council, Mr. Hickson said that the association had offered to help ih the selection of ground for courts. He had asked that the council should not forget tennis, when it was laying out sports grounds. Ten courts, five grass and five chip, were being put down in the Domain. It was reported that Auckland, Waikato and Waiharapa Associations had applied for the North Island championships at Easter. The Emergency Committee had considered it advisable to instruct the delegates- to support Waikato’s claims if Auckland’s were frustrate#.
