LATE MRS. MARY WOOD

Mrs. Mary Wood, who died on Sunday at the home of her son, Wynyard Road, Mount Eden, at the age of 89, was the widow of the late Mr. Joseph Wood. > Mrs. Wood was born in Manchester, and the famous Dr. Johnson was her great-uncle. In 1863, Mr. and Mrs. Wood came to New Zealand in the Ulcoats, the first Iron ship to make the journey. They came out under the “40 acres system,” by which they paid the passage money and were entitled to 40 acres of Crown land on arrival. Mr. Wood, who died in 1882, was engaged in farming at Karangahape Road. Mount Albert and Onslow Road. Mrs. Wood is survived by five sons, two daughters, 23 grandchildren and 16 great- grandchildren.
