SHAKESPEAREAN SEASON
MR. WILKIE’S AMBITION Referring to his own company, Mr. Wilkie states that “Henry VIII.” would be the 23rd of Shakespeare’s works which he had produced, and “Antonv and Cleopatra” would be the 24th. His ambition, of course, was to produce all the 37 plays, as was done in recent years at the Old Vic. Theatre in London. No individual producer has accomplished this feat, but G. V. Brooke, during his Melbourne season, produced as many as he had. The difficulty arose when about the 30th production was attempted. It was no easy matter to produce the remaining plays in a manner that would prove acceptable to the public. To the Shakespearean student they would prove attractive, but it would be necessary to cultivate the public’s taste for Shakespeare before they could become a payable proposition. Mr. Wilkie said that there appeared to be an impression abroad that he would be playing a return season at Hobart after his Launceston season, but this was not correct. The Allan Wilkie Shakespearean season will open at His Majesty’s on Saturday with “Henry VIII.,” which will also be presented on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Box Plans open to-morrow at Lewis R. Eady and Son, Ltd.
