N.Z. CUP TRIAL

PRINCE POINTER’S FINE EFFORT FAVOURITE FAILS TO BEGIN The New Zealand Cup Trial Handicap was a disappointing kind of race. The favourite Acron, broke up badly at the start, and Sea Pearl failed to begin, the pair being in a hopeless position before the field was a furlong on the journey. HOW THEY RAN Holly Boy made a brave showing for half-a-mile, where he faulted. Talent then went into the lea.d. with St. Maura and Peter Bingen on his wheel. Going out of the straight, St. Maura and Peter Bingen took the lead from Talent, with Black Admiral and Prince Pointer handily placed. Half-a-mile from home Prince Pointer made an effort which took him into second place. Entering the straight St. Maura was still in charge, but when it came to business. Prince Pointer headed her. While under pressure St. Maura made a break, and this enabled Black Admiral to secure second money. Peter Bingen, who was beaten at the bend for home, filled fourth place, being a long way behind idle placed horses. Prince Pointer was the outsider of the party. He :is owned by Messrs. Jack and Stewart, and is trained by R. E. Mills, who drove him a fine race. A CONFIDENT SUPPORTER Prince Pointer Yvas the outsider of the field of eight runners, and returned liis supporters a remunerative price. A few West Coasters present participated in the turn-up. one of the owners. Mr. J. Jack, being well known in the golden coast. One of these enthusiasts remarked to “Abaydos” prior to the Wellington fixture that Prince Pointer was doing all that was required of him and it would take something better than those in the trial heat to | beat him. The coaster went so far as to say that the gallant black horse i would give all and sundry a headache ; before the New Zealand Cup race was finished. The first part of this theory j having come true, it will be interesting to see how the latter portion works il out.
