FIRE AT HOWICK

FARM-HOUSE DESTROYED A fire early on Saturday morning totally destroyed an eight-roomed farm house at Millen’s Hill, near Howick, owned by Mr. Robert Millen, of Bloomfield Avenue, Epsom. The occupants of the house. Mr. John Millen. his wife and child, were awakened about 1.30 a.m v by the glare of the fire in a room nearby. The family was forced to make a hurried escape along with two farm labourers, who had been sleeping at the rear of the house. Some of the outbuildings were saved, but the house was soon destroyed, as there were no means of fighting the flames. It is believed that a defective chimney caused the fire. The house was insured for £BOO and the furniture for £SOO, both with the New Zealand Insurance Company.
