MOUNT ALBERT AFFAIRS

Sir,— The exposure of the methods of the Mount Albert Borougli has given the ratepayers food for thought, particularly in reference to its procedure in dismissing its engineer. There has been a lot of talk of British fair play. Now I would lik 3 to ask the question: “How is the engineer going to obtain British fair play when he has to appear before a CDuncil that comprises the committee that asked for his resignation?” This committee must now be consistent and straightforward and back up its original verdict. It is a most extraordinary procedure that a committee should ask for a resignation or say that the council had no confidence in its engineer, prior to the council’s dealing: with, or even considering the question. The Mayor and his councillor-confreres have now landed themselves into an awkward position and cannot expect to retain the confidence and support of the burgesses of Mount Albert, whom they were elected to represent.

There is now only one course open to them, to see the folly of their actions and give way to better representation upon ’.he council. I do not wish you to deem me too insistent in this matter, yet the urgency of this heartburning question, so far as Mount Albert taxpayers arc concerned, prompts this further letter to the only journal that champions the rights of those whose rights require championing. ARGUS.
