ONE TREE HILL’S DRAINAGE PROBLEM

ELLERSLIE TO BE JOINED As the result of correspondence which passed between the One Tree Hill Road Board and the Health Department recently over the sewerage question in that district, the Aledical Officer of Health called a conference of the bodies concerned. At last evening’s meeting of the One Tree Hill Road Board, the engineer and chairman, Air. R. G. Clark, reported on the conference. After pointing out the extreme urgency of taking steps to rectify the Ellerslie septic tank nuisance Dr. Hughes suggested that all those areas sloping towards the Alanukau Harbour should be brought under one drainage board, and invited discussion on the question. He favoured the extension of the ramifications of the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board, as it already has the necessary legal powers. He pointed out that to form a new drainage board to deal with these areas would involve the introduction of new legislation, necessitating a delay of some years.

After considerable discussion the Chairman of the Alount Roskill Road Board and the Alayor of Onehunga expressed their opinions that, as their districts each had an outfall sewer into the Alanukau Harbour, they would have nothing to gain by joining in with any new scheme at this stage, and 8.11 parties agreed that the formation of such a drainage board should have taken place about 20 years ago instead of now.

The Alayor of Onehunga expressed the desire of his council to do all possible to assit both Ellersile and the undrained portions of One Tree Hill to obtain sewer drainage, and it was agreed—subject to confirmation by the Ellerslie Town Board and the One Tree Hill Road Board —that One Tree Hill’s engineer prepare the necessary plans of a joint outfall sewer from the Ellerslie septic tank to run through the Rockfield Road area of One Tree Plill and discharge into the Onehunga sewer at Felix Street. The members of the board decided to support the scheme.
