APPRENTICE QUOTAS

OBSTACLE TO EMPLOYMENT CONFERENCE TO BE HELD A conference on apprenticeship anomalies is to be held on September 27 between representatives of the Auckland schools, banks, insurance companies, labour interests, the Employers’ and the Industrial Associations and the chair of education at the University College. The Manufacturers’ Association was approached yesterday and asked to send representatives. Great difficulty was said to have been experienced by boys wishing to enter trades. Mr. J. A. C. Allum stated that city boys were often prevented from taking up trades owing to the district quota of apprentices being filled by apprentices in the country. Messrs. L. Joll and M. G. Finn were appointed to represent the Manufacturers’ Association at the conference.
