Although the accused has been bookmaking tor some years and. carries on a fairly large business, there has never been any suggestion whatever that he has not played the game right up to the last halfpenny,” said counsel for James Purves, who was charged at the Magistrate’s Court this morning with having used his premises as a common gaming-house. “I suppose he -wouldn’t get througn the work if he didn’t,” said the magistrate. A police statement was given to the effect that on the morning of September 3, about £SO was taken in as many minutes. There were no previous convictions against accused, but the maximum penalty was asked for. A fine of £ 100 was imposed.
