WHEN THE BELLS CEASED

Mr. Frank Pearce, verger of the parish church at Salcombe, Devon, died in the church belfry. He had rung the bell for the morning service for some minutes when the ring ceased, and his son, who was in the church, went to find out the reason. He found Mr. Pearce dead on the belfry floor. Mr. Pearce was about 65 years old. He had been town crier for a number of years and verger for 35 years.
