There was a glittering ceremony on the occasion of the presentation of the “Book of France.” The Hotel De Ville’s gilded salons were filled by a galaxy of notables. The President of the Municipal Council and the Prefect of the Seine made eloquent entente cordiale speeches. Sir Austen Chamberlain, British Foreign Minister, reaffirmed his affection for France and his conviction of the necessity of a Franco-British union for world pe^.ce. —A. and N.Z.
A recent cablegram said: British municipalities in 1016 presented to M. Poincare addresses of gratitude to and sympathy with France. In recognition of this gift a French committee proposes to present to the British Foreign Secretary, Sir Austen Chamberlain, on August 31, a similar gift. It is having prepared a volume which will contain prefaces written by MM. Poincare and Briand, illustrations by French masters. comments on AngloFrench amity by the President, M. Doumergue, and by M. Clemenceau, tributes to the British by Marshals Foch, Jofi’re and Petain, and also an epitome of France’s glories.
