improvement proposals \ CONFERENCE HELD I From Our Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, To-day. A conference convened by the Mayor, Mr. Wm. Wallnutt, at the request of lie Waihi Retailers’ Association, was :.t d last night. Representatives were present from the boroiigh council, hamber of commerce, retailers and the Ohinemuri Mine and Batteries’ Union. The purpose of the conference was to try and improve mining conditions in Waihi, thus giving an impetus to the industry. The Mayor outlined several proposals: Firstly, to approach the Waihi Goldmining Company and secure its co-operation by throwing open certain areas held for tribute purposes. If this was granted to approach the Government for a subsidy on working* the same. (2). The formation of a co-op-erative syndicate for prospecting and lo apply for an increase in State aid to prospectors. After discussion it was decided to adopt the proposals, and that the Government be asked to amend the Mining Act to provide for adduction of rent to Is per acre until payable ore is mined.

A proposal that the continuous clause of the Act be struck out found no favour with the meeting. A further conference with the company present will be held later.
