CRUISING CLUB SOCIAL
PONSONBY’S PRIZE NIGHT 27 YEARS OF PROGRESS Representatives of kindred clubs were present in large numbers at the Ponsonby Cruising Club’s annual prize night and smoke concert last evening. In welcoming the visitors, the chairman, Mr. A. Thompson, briefly outlined the history of the club from the date of its formation 27 years ago. Th i club had made rapid progress, he said, and referred to the excellent work done by Messrs. R. Masefield D. Patterson and S. W. Buck. The commodore, Mr. W. S. Goodison, commented upon the feeling of goodfellowship that existed, both ashore and afloat, between the various clubs. On behalf of the kindred clubs, Messrs. J. W. Frater, C. J. Collings, and PI. B. Webster returned thanks. The prizes won during last season were presented by Mr. E. J. Kelly, patron of the club. The principal trophy was the Upton Challenge Cup for 22footers won by Lucille, representing the Point Chevalier Sailing Club. In accepting the cup the owner, Mr. McCreagh, said that the winning of the coveted trophy was entirely due to the excellent manner in which his boat had been handled by the skipper and crew. Among the other cups were the following:—Palmer Cup, won by Wairiki; Jackson Cup, won by Starlight: Cup. won by Drone; Elliston Cup, won by Sea Sleigh; Carr Cup, won by Alert; Hewson Memorial Cup and medals, won by Joan. During the evening, the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, who was present, was asked to forward to Sir Thomas Lipton, on behalf of the club, an autographic album depicting the last race for the Lipton Cup. which was previously described in THE SUN.
