MONEY-LENDER DONE TO DEATH IN SYDNEY
VICTIM ON FLOOR OF OFFICE, WITH SIGNS OF FIERCE STRUGGLE By Cable. —Press Association. —Copyright Reed. 11.40 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. A murder was committed in the heart of Sydney yesterday. The dead body of a money-lender named Daniel Condon, who had conducted an extensive business, was found on the floor of his office in a building in the city early in the afternoon. Deceased’s head had been dreadfully injured with some blunt instrument. There was evidence that a fierce struggle had taken place. A man who is supposed to have been the murderer was seen to leave the building shortly after the crime must have been committed. —A. and N.Z. There is no trace of Condon's murderer, though the police hold a description given by a man who saw the person leave the office. This witness knocked repeatedly at the office door, but received no answer. Eventually the man presumed to be the murderer came out. In reply to a question, he said that Condon was inside, and then rushed away. The witness again tried to gain admission, and called the police. The door was broken open, and Condon was found with a towel round his neck. Apparently the murderer tried to strangle him before the fatal blows on the head were inflicted. The only indication of the crime, which two girls in an adjacent office heard, was the furniture being knocked about, but there were no sounds of a quarrel or cries. Condon did a large lending business among Civil servants. —A. and N.Z.
