An Authority on Breeding

During tlie winter recess a lot was written in this and other columns concerning the question of in-breeding, and I have now received from Major Platt, a great supporter of this method of mating, the advance MSS. of a new book that he is bringing out shortly, giving a record of his experience in the breeding of horses. The chapter concerning in-breeding is especially interesting. Major Plait is very keen on father-to-daughter and mother-to-son matings, and bases his advocacy upon the bredeing of Bartlett’s Childers, who, as he writes, was the “father and progenitor of 90 per cent, of the thoroughbreds of the present day.” Bartlett’s Childers was by the Barley Arabian out of a mare called Betty Leedes, who was by Careless (by Spanker) out of a mare named Sister t° Leedes, who was by the Leedes Arabian out of an un-named daughter of Spanker, who was out of Spanker’s mother. Major Platt comments upon this as follows:—“Here,” he "we have through the female side a son (Spanker) put to his mother (Spanker's dam). The produce, being a filly, was put to an outcross in the Leedes Arabian. The produce, being again a filly, was crossed in again to Spanker through his son Careless.” MEETINGS TO COME August 9, 11. 13.—Canterbury J.C. August 20. Pakuranga Hunt Club.
