SPENDING ITS PROFITS
CHRISTCHURCH COUNCIL NO INCREASE IN RATES Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The Christchurch City Council, by its Labour majority, decided last evening, in order to balance the budget for the current year, to use the accumulated profits from its electric light department, £B,OOO, and from its quarry account, £5,000, a total of £13,000. Having estimated its expenditure at something more 4 than the current rate would yield, th'e alternative was to raise the rate from 3 3-8 d to 3 19-32 d. The council chose not to raise the rate. The policy decided upon was opposed strenuously by the opposition party, but as this party numbers only five it was out-voted, and the estimates, with resolutions providing for the use of these accumulated funds, were adopted. The meeting lasted until 2 a It is stated by the Labour Alayor, Rev. J. K. Archer, and the Labour members of the council, that these appropriated moneys will be repaid as soon as possible. At the elections both parties were pledged not to increase the rates.
