GATHERED GOLD OR PROMENADE?

FINALITY NOT YET REACHED The trial of Walter McCarthy ant] William Matterson for being implicated in the alleged ringing-in of the New Zealand speed merchant, Promenade, as Gathered Gold in the Commonwealth. is still dragging on in Sydney, each hearing of the case bringing a further adjournment Further evidence of identification, it i> stated, is required, and there is a likelihood of more experts being sent across the Tasman to take a hand in the affair. It was stated in court at the recent hearing that Promenade had established in New Zealand the fast time oi 2min. llsec. for one mile. PECULIAR MARK Peter Ivierce, chairman of stewards, starter, and registrar of the Victorian Trotting and Racing Association, declared that li;s identification of the mare, Gathered Gold, depended mainlv on a peculiar facial mark, and a few white hairs under the saddle. “Never in my life have I registered another horse with that particular mark,” he said. PROMENADE DIED Detective-Constable Lawrence, who arrested McCarthy in Auckland, reported him as having stated: “I know there’s L»een a lot of fuss about it- I sold Promenade to my brother-in-law, Edwards, and she died.
