Ship That Would Not Stop
Drifter’s Crew Left to Drown A dramatic story of the sinking of a Lowestoft steam drifter was told when the drifter’s crew of ten were landed at North Shields. The crew alleged that an unknown ship collided with their vessel at night, then steamed away without oflering assistance. The drifter John Alfred was rammed amidships about 10.30 at night, and a large hole was torn in her side just above the water line. Her crew were in a desperate position when their vessel heeled over and water rushed in. It was at once seen that there was no hope of saving the ship. Fortunately the weather was perfect, and the lifeboat was launched. By this time the collier was out of sight, no attempt having been made to render assistance. The shipwrecked crew rowed in the direction of the fishing j grounds. An hour later they were picked up by a Yarmouth drifter.
