COUNCILLORS RESIGN
“PLEDGES NOT KEPT” DIFFERENCES AT TAKAPUNA I BELIEVE that this council is not keeping its election pledges,” declared Cr. J. Davis at a meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council last night in handing in his resignation as a member of the Works Committee. “We are merely following in the footsteps of the last council in the matter of expenditure. We promised to reduce all we could, but, although we have been irr office for over two months, nothing has been done.” Wages paid for outside work since July 5 totalled over £1,130, so, in view mined to take this step to absolve himof the pledge of economy, he deterself from blame. The small economy of £3,785 in annual salaries could not outweigh this huge expenditure. Cr. J. Guiniven, in tendering his resignation as a member of the Works Committee, declared that he had no confidence in the chairman. Several dealings, especially with regard to the calling of a special meeting, had been highly irregular, he said. He also wished to resign from the Parks and Fire-fighting Committees, since he believed he could do more good as a freelance. He felt that the council could not afford to prejudice the ratepayers, since they /had been placed in office, not because of their merits, but through their views on the tram question. AMALGAMATION QUESTION Mr. J. W. Hayden asked that an opportunity for discussing the question of the amalgamation of North Shore boroughs should be given. Many people believed that the scheme was quite sound, and were desirous of hearing more about it. Mr. A. M. Gould held that there can be no central point of administration, and consequently no saving in expenses. There could be no common civic pride or interest. In reply, Mr. J. Guiniven mentioned that several interests in common, the destructor, water supply scheme, electric power and harbour bridge being examples. A meeting of the four boroughs concerned to discuss the question is to beheld on Thursday week.
