“Throw Trophies Over a Cliff”
SCHOOL FOOTBALL RECTOR’S STRONG VIEWS (Special to THE SUX. ) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Strong views on the subject of Rugby and secondary schools of the Dominion were expressed by the rector of the Timaru Boys’ High School, Mr. W. Thomas, at the annual reunion of old boys of the school last evening. School football in New Zealand, he said, had reached a crisis, and it rested with the old boys of the Dominion secondary schools whether it retained its present place or not. At present Rugby was the principal game at the Timaru High School, but he could not say that it would remain so. It was time to look into things after such scandals as the recent Ranfurly Shield question. Personally He would like to see all trophies for football thrown over a cliff. The game was to be played for its own sake, and not for the prize.
