RINGING-IN CHARGE
NEW ZEALAND MARE MEN STAND TRIAL By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright SYDNEY, Thursday. The hearing was continued at the Central Police Court to-day of the case in which William Matterson and Walter McCarthy were charged with conspiring to cheat and defraud the Richmond Trotting Club • and the New South Wales, the Victorian and the West Australian Trotting Associations of large sums of money. It was alleged that a trotting mare which was registered in Australia under the name of Gathered Gold was identical with the New Zealand mare Promenade. A detective who interviewed McCarthy at Auckland on July 6 stated in evidence that he had conclusive proof that Gathered Gold and Promenade were one and the same horse. A trainer said he had identified the mare known as Gathered Gold, which was in the police station yard, as Promenade. He had not the slightest doubt as to the mare’s identity. The hearing was again adjourned.— A. and N.Z.
