HONOURING FRANCE
ADDRESS BY CONSUL MEETING OF FRENCH CLUB Last evening members of the French Club met in the clubrooms to honour the national day of France. M. Paul Serre, Consul for Franc®, gave a most interesting revie.v of I lie history of wine in France, front Its introduction in the third century of our era to the present day. An intimate knowledge of the wines of France, and a delightful method of expression made the talk most enjoyable. M. Serre concluded: “And now I wish to express my regret that we cannot, at the conclusion of this address. offer you a glass of Arst-class champagne, that we might drink together a toast to France, the Republic, and President Doumergue. In lieu of ‘extra sec’ we shall presently drink cafe au lait.” Mr. F. W. Reed, who had journeyed all the way from Whangarei for the purpose, delivered an address on Alexandre Dumas, pere. A charming musical programme was opened by “The Marseliaise.” sung in French by Miss Thompson, a pupil of Mrs. Cyril Towsey. Other delightful items were contributed by Mrs. J. J. Sullivan, Madame Gamier, and M. Paul Serre. Mrs. Osborne, Mrs. C. Towsey, and Miss O’Leary acted as accompanists, and Mrs. W. J. Matier was the hostess for the evening.
