Agreement With Bus Company

COMMUNITY CLUB’S MOVE VERBAL PROMISE TO HELP The General Transit and Social Club which operate various community bus services, has entered into an agreement, verbal, it should be stated —with the Watson Bus Company, Ltd., for the carriage of the club’s members. rpHE Watson Company has licences X transferred by the City Council from Hamilton and is operating the “green” buses to Parnell Park and to Point Chevalier. The company will apply to the Licensing Authority for licences under the Motor Omnibus Traffic Act to conduct these services. Mr. Harold Schmidt, president of the General Transit and Social Club, explained that the club’s agreement with the company was purely verbal. “The arrangement is that the company will carry anybody free and we are hoping that nobody but our members will get on. We have agreed to help the company if we can with donations.” The club's word is the only oond. but the company was satisfied with that, and now paid all the expenses and depended on the club members’ generosity to keep it going. “But,” explained Mr. Schmidt, “the owners »f these buses are not bound to continue the service one minute longer than it pleases them to do so. Everything now depends on how long the City Council will permit these buses to run so long as they don't charge fares.” A petition signed by 300 Point Chevalier residents had been received by the club asking it to maintain the community bus service and the green buses would be run there on the donation system. Mr. Schmidt stated that the six and seven passenge. community motorcars were not being used much and would shortly be discontinued. “The money paid under the community system is no more a fare than the church collection is atmittance money,” he said. 1 “On* would think that if a business

was prepared to sell its goods :for whatever the customer liked to give —when the customer was also free to take the geods for nothing—nothing could be more idealistic."
