BRITISH MOTOR INDUSTRY GROWS
EXPORTS INCREASING DOMINION BODY-BUILDING (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. yyiILLE the British car industry is expanding rapidly overseas, there is a ready recognition on the part of Home motor manufacturers that their own house must be kept in order and the hime industry maintained. This fact is mentioned in the trade bulletin received by H.M. Trade Commissioner, in which it is stated that increases in output and in many cases, extensions of plant and buildings are being recorded by nearly all better known manufacturers.
The export of motor vehicles from Great Britain continues to increase. During the four months ending April
30, 1927, the value of the motor-cars, commercial vehicles, parts and accessories, including chassis, exported amounted to £3,750,890, as compared with £3,416,897 for the corresponding period of last year, and there seems every prospect of a new record total being established again this year.
The self-reliance of New Zealand In car body-building is reflected—to however small a degree—in the figures of chassis exports from Britain.
“While increases are recorded in the export of complete motor-cars and motor-lorries,” it is stated, “the most marked increase is to be noted in the export of chassis. The increase is so phenomenal that the export of chassis, particularly light chassis, might almost be looked upon as a new feature of the industry. The number of chassis, net weight below 25cwt, exported during the first four months of 1925 was 1,222, for the same period of 1926, 4,277, and for the like period of 1927 the export reached the record of 8,748, an increase of over 100 per cent, over the period of the previous year. The value of all chassis exported during the four months ending April 30, 1927, was £1.619,648, while the value of motor-cars and lorries was £1,589,286.”
