WOW! WOW!

LISTENING FOR MELBA NOT HEARD IN AUCKLAND Wow! Wow! Rip! Swizzle! Bang! Bang! And then one glorious note of Dame Nellie Melba’s voice. Bang! Crash! Crash! Bang! Oom-oom-oom-sphut! Then another indistinct note which sounded like Dame Nellie Melba’s voice. Enter an avalanche. It seemed to be careering down the highest mountain in Switzerland, and tearing up trees and houses and people in its wild flight. , , Through this terrific noise hundreds of Aucklanders sat by their wireless sets last evening, trying to listen-in to Brisbane, where a concert by Dame Nellie Melba was being relayed from 4QG. , . Some of them got the wave-length and sat on it for two hours. All they heard was a terrific noise, with valves howling their worst. Occasionallv. through the awful squalling and bawling and shrieking Dame Nellie’s voice would be heard for an instant, only to disappear into the sea of noise again.

Almost everyone with a set was tuning in at the same time, and consequently nobody heard anything of the famous diva. A prominent radio man stated lodav that the howling was due to amateurs wrongly using their sets. Manv Auckland radio enthusiasts expressed their disappointment this morning.
