CHAIRMAN WON'T RESIGN

A peculiar situation has arisen in the northern mining township of Hikurangi. It is temporarily without a local governing authority, the town board having resigned in a body owing to the refusal of Mr. R. C. Cherrie to vacate the chair. A petition signed by five members was presented to the chairman at the meeting this week, calling on him to vacate the chair in the interest of gbod government and harmonious working. The petition was signed by Messrs. Nesbit, Hamilton, Rickard, and Lomas. The chairman, however, refused to give up his position, and the five members therefore resigned, making an election necessary.
