DRIYER AND FIREMAN FREED FROM BLAME

RAILWAY CROSSING FATALITY MAUNGATUROTO INQUEST The driver and the fireman of the train which caused the death of Edgar Francis Nazar, of Maungaturoto, on June 24, were exonerated by the jury at the inquest which was held yesterday. There was no evidence to show how Nazer got. into the position in which he was killed. Neither the driver nor the fireman was aware of the accident until informed the following morning. The inquest on the decapitated body of Nazer was concluded at Maungaturoto yesterday before Mr. T. M. Healey, coroner, and a jury. Mr. F. G. J. Temm represented the Railway Department, and Mr. J. Gunness the relatives of deceased. Evidence was given that the usual warning whistle was given prior to the train approaching the crossing, and that the electric headlight on the engine was in good working order and showing full on when the train in question passed over the crossing. The body was apparently run over at the extreme edge of the crossing and alongside of the cattle stop. A horsebridle was found near the body, and it is assumed that the deceased went out to catch a horse. The jury’s verdict was that Nazer was killed by a train passing over him at the Maungaturoto crossing on the night of June 23, and that there is insufficient evidence to show how the deceased got into the position to get killed. The jury exonerated the driver and fireman of the train.
