PETROL TAX

PETITION TO HOUSE COLOURED FOR EXEMPTED {THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter.') WELLINGTON, Tuesday. On account of the greater number of vehicles using the roads being of the lighter class, 97 petitioners to the House of Representatives consider that a petrol tax is the most equitable solution of the problem of the user paying for the maintenance of the roads. A petition which Mr. A. Harris presented to-day states that the heavy traffic fees in force relate only to lorries carrying loads exceeding two tons. The collection of the petrol tax is suggested through the Customs Department in preference to collection of the present tax by local bodies. It is suggested that coloured petrol could be used for those exempted from the provisions of the tax. such as tractors, machine-plant and launches.
