OBJECTS TO ELECTION Quite a “breeze” pervaded the Mount Roskill Board meeting last night, when Mr. A. C. Belcher, formerly chairman of the Finance Committee, most pronouncedly objected to the manner in which Mr. Davies had been appointed as his successor. He protested that the subject had not been mentioned on the notice issued to convene the special meeting held on the 21st inst., and’ the manner in which the election lia.d been carried out created grave suspicion. He was not going to sit upon a committee under a chairman who could claim much less service on the board than himself, and who could not boast of superior experience in financial affairs compared with his own knowledge. If that was the policy to be pursued by the new board, he would not sit upon the council. The chairman denied any irregularity in the method of procedure concerning the appointment of Mr. Davies, and moved to the confirmation of the minutes. There was manifest hesitation to comply with this request and a significant but desultory argument ensued thereon. Mr. Tozer contending that the appointment, constituted “ordinary business,” was made at a special meeting, whereas the Act specifically demanded that no ordinary business must be transacted at a special meeting. Finally, after much controversial opinion, the board agreed to again put Mr ; Davies’s nomination to the vote. This resulted in a decision of four to one m favour of Mr. Davies, the other members refraining from voting.
