VANISHED ROYALIST
SEARCH FOR M. DAUDET
INQUIRIES INTO HOAX
By Cable. —Press Association. —Copyright Reed. 9.58 a.m. PARIS, Tuesday. Replying to Socialist interpellations regarding M. Daudet, the Minister of Justice asked for an adjournment till the judicial Inquiry was completed, making the matter a vote of confidence.
The Chamber approved this by 350 votes to 185.
The police searched the office of “Action Francaise,” and found six tlephone wires, three connected with the exchange, and the others apparently unconnected. It is understood that excavations are probable with a view to tracking the mysterious lines. In M. Leon Daudet’s newspaper, “Action Francaise,” there appeared today an editorial article signed by him. The writer reiterates that his son Philippe was murdered.
It is believed this article was telephoned by M. Daudet, and that he Is not far from Paris.
Inquiries are still being conducted throughout the Government departments to ascertain the whys and wherefores of the hoax as the result of which the Royalist author was released from gaol. Incidentally vengeance has fallen on the hapless M. Catry, director of the prison, who has been dismissed and called upon to explain why he was so easily deceived: The Royalists are working hard on behalf of M. Catry. They point out that a week before the hoax he received a genuine order by telephone to release an anarchist who was hunger-striking. The police say the hoax means the end of the decision to grant an amnesty to M. Daudet. —A. and N.Z.
