"Miss N.Z. 1927” Contestants Gathering at Cargen AS the “Miss New Zealand 1927” competition closed yesterday, no more photographs are required. The Auckland judges will meet contestants at the Hotel Cargen this afternoon. They will select eight semifinalists in addition to those already chosen. The 16 semi-finalists will subsequently make their appearance at leading Auckland theatres. “Miss Auckland” and her Maid of Honour will eventually go South to meet “Miss Wellington,” “Miss Christchurch,” and “Miss Dunedin.” The successful candidate will, of course, go to Hollywood.
If anyone wants a motion picture wind machine in good condition he can find one at the bottom of Payette Lake, near McCall, Idaho. During the filming of exterior scenes for the Universal Jewel production, “Prisoners of the Storm,” the company dragged a wind machine, consisting of a powerful gasoline motor and a huge propeller, across the surface of the lake, which was covered with ice. The wind machine found a thin spot in the ice and crashed merrily to the bottom. House Peters plays the starring role in the picture.
The dance of the faun is one of the most elaborate episodes of Rex Ingram’s production of “The Magician,” with Alice Terry in the leading role. More than 500 trained dancers appear in the reproduction of this famous dance staged in a forest setting on the studio grounds near Nice, where a great part of this Somerset Maugham story was made. Besides Miss Terry, the cast includes Ivan Petrovich and Firmin Gemier in the leading roles. Activities in the Warner Studios centre about the starting of Syd. Chaplin’s next comedy. The picture is being prepared under the title of “The Race Track Tout/ but a new name will be given it before release. Helene Costello has been chosen as a member of the cast. Syd. Chaplin’s comedies yet to be released in New Zealand are 'The Missing Link” and “The New Boy.”
Madge Kennedy, who plays the role of the news writer in the UniversalJewel “Oh Baby,” maintains that news reporters do not carry note books, but write whatever information they want to record on their shirt cuffs or the corners of newspaper, or anything at all “and what is more, they always have to borrow pencils.” Miss Kennedy is one of a cast of players featured in “Oh Baby.” Her co-workers include Little Billy, Creighton Hale, Ethel Channon and David Butler.
The balance of -the cast of “The Climbers,” a Master picture, in which Irene Rich and May McAvoy are costarred, has been announced. A particularly strong quarette of players in Myrna Loy, Clyde Cook, Dot Farley, and Anders Randolph will enact the various roles in support of Irene Rich and May McAvoy.
Dolores Costello’s newest starring picture, as yet untitlerd, is now being cast. An interesting group of players has been assembled with Betty Blythe. Opposite Miss Costello will be Malcolm McGregor. The role of the villain will be in the hands of Warner Oland.
